LONDON FASHION WEEK 2011: Fyodor Golan

Recent graduates from London's pregistous Instituto Marangoni and Antwerp's Royal Academy of Fine Arts, design duo Fyodor Podgorny and Golan Frydman have some impressive CVs. Previously working at Alexander McQueen, Raf Simons, Richard Nichol and Issey Miyake, the pair launched their joint label Fyodor Golan last year. The skills they have accumulated are evident on the catwalk: leather is sharply tailored into waves on jackets and skirts, while hard-line bodices are perfectly fitted with cut-out details. Leather is ubiquitous in this collection, etched with symbolic scarring like that of various tribal customs for beauty, status and decoration. In addition to African tribal tradition, legendary Greek goddesses were also cited as an influence, as elongated silhouettes created powerful and striking dresses towards the end of the collection. There were standout looks from the strong set of pieces, which included an ethereal high-necked dress with circular etchings and a soft leather train, and the final look: a bright navy panelled dress which continued the London Fashion Week trend for Issa-blue and sultry sky-high skirt slits. Although the overall impression was one of distinguished opulence, the constrainingly ruched ankle-length skirts added a sense of naivety to the Fyodor Golan woman, whose head sails high but whose feet must take tiny steps in order to walk. Their muse is a traveller and an explorer, battle-scarred and elegant, but to make this look work at home, try walking boots instead of elasticated leather.

LONDON FASHION WEEK 2011: Danielle Scutt

Central Saint Martins graduate Danielle Scutt returned to London Fashion Week this season, with a collection shown in a fairy-lit warehouse on a rainy New Oxford Street. Models stalked down the runway to a soundtrack of jangling gold: extravagant and overblown costume jewellery adorned every outfit at the ears, neck, waist and toes. Aztec semi-circles and gilt mini-lipsticks hung from every chain and every model, giving the front row a sneak preview of Scutt's new costume jewellery range for Freedom at Topshop. Androgyny turned to vampish 1980s references as all-black mannish suits were followed with crushed plum velvet. Sharply tailored double breasted jackets were teamed with short pleated skirts, while wide silken fishnet dresses added a geometric touch. Hair was slicked back, and back-combed for a 1980s power-dressing feel, and lips were dark and defined. The standout look was a series of heavy skirts in taupe and black, teamed with ornate gold material twisted into kitsch puff-sleeved jackets. The show continued the emerging trend for glamour, the epitome of which is Tom Ford's secretive AW11 collection. With this collection Scutt shows us that she has truly returned to her fashion home, and she has been welcomed back.

LONDON FASHION WEEK 2011: Street Style

Eithen was outside the British Fashion Council tent wearing this dapper suit he designed himself. Not just channelling Mad Men for the day, for Eithen this suited and booted look is a way of life, and the basis of his student days attending London's Savile Row Academy. I admired his fashion credentials and the subtle matching of his burgundy tie, shoes and umbrella handle, which set off the brown in the suit fabric. Attention to detail, here shown with the tie-pin and pocket handkerchief, adds to Eithen's look, which he ensures is not too fusty, choosing this season's narrow collar style. I asked him about his menswear inspirations:

What are you wearing, where is it from?
Own label suit ( Eithen Sweet Bespoke), Russell and Bromley shoes.

What was your favourite show at London Fashion Week, which one are you most looking forward to?
Issa London was amazing. Great soundtrack too. Looking forward to menswear day, Hardy Aimes and E-Tautz.

Where do you shop for clothes?
I wear most of my own stuff, mainly suits, but I do like a bit of Aquascutum, their shirts are nice.

What is your favourite designer?
Hardy Aimes ... and of course Tom Ford.

What are you doing at the moment? How is your menswear designing going?
Currently in the Savile Row Academy which is based in Maurice Sedwell, on Savile Row of course. Everything is going very well, London Fashion Week has just taken things (and me) to a whole new level, I've suddenly got even busier and I'm very excited for what's about to come....

LONDON FASHION WEEK 2011: Street Style

I met Holly in a fashion cupboard as we packed up hundreds of dresses we would rather wear, and we took on Fashion Week together. A Kings College student, she told me about her style from that Matthew Williamson scarf – a relic of a design internship – to those Russell & Bromley shoes. Here is what she had to say about our cupboard, Fashion Week, and that furry bag:

Where is your outfit from?
The dress is from the Reiss sale, shoes are Russell and Bromley loafers, my jacket is Topshop of course! The scarf is Matthew Williamson from when I worked there – in return for walking his dog – and the furry bag is River Island, it's great because it doubles up as a pillow, but then again it does get completely wet in the rain.

What are your favourite designers?
Alexander McQueen and Matthew Williamson, but I really love Kinder Agguguni especially his attention to detail and the amazing presentation at all his shows.

Where do you like to shop for clothes?
I'd LIKE to shop at Aggugini and Vivienne Westwood, but I settle for Topshop and Urban Outfitters! Maybe one day I will own one of this year's Aggugini cut-out coats.

What do you think is going to be big next season?
I am rooting for polo necks, we saw them at PPQ, Louise Amstrup, and loads at Mulberry. Also pom-pom scarfs definitely – long ones at Mulberry and bright ones at David Koma.

LONDON FASHION WEEK 2011: Street Style

This girl was everywhere outside Somerset House at Fashion Week, and although London Student does not advocate carrying dogs in non-designated-dog-carrying bags, let alone in £766 chestnut Mulberry Bayswaters, these high-waisted bright blue trousers epitomise SS11. The hue brings to mind that coveted K.Mid Issa dress, while the wide-leg cut and front crease channels spring's seventies atmosphere. Topshop has particularly on-trend similar trousers in tobacco and New Look is stocking blue ones at half the price, so there is no excuse not to copy Girl With Dog's trouser style, although not her animal accessorising.

LONDON FASHION WEEK 2011: Louise Amstrup

Danish student Louise Amstrup has been tipped for great things after winning last year's On/Off Visionary Award, and her AW11 show did not disappoint. Drawing on American youth revolution in the twentieth century and anti-conformist female rebels, Born Bad showed us hyper-feminine silhouettes in subversive patent leather and shots of acid yellow. Knee socks added an air of feigned innocence, while Amstrup's signature panelling this season appears in rebellious asphalt and jet black. 1940s zoot suits are cited as an influence, and it is clear from the sharply tailored hats that here the overall effect is one of rakish nonchalance.

Black polo necks in patent leather add a unconventional touch, while two-tone sleeves continue the fashion week theme of sudden colour and texture blocking. Black is the default colour of choice, especially seen in flippy skirts and twice-tied belts. Channel Amstrup's rebellious atmosphere by looking out for grey panelling, plum merino and acidic yellow silk. Team with budget black tights and a polo neck, and create your own historical youth rebellion, although maybe leave out the patent leather dresses.

Street Style

I spotted Chris and his exemplary layering outside Queen Mary, where he told me how much he likes ASOS, American Apparel, and Biomedicine. So many layers can be hard to pull off, but Chris’ maroon hoodie brings it all together and the cute NSPCC badge brings some charitable colour to his lapel. I asked him about his fashion favourites:

Who are you wearing? Converse trainers, my jeans are from ASOS, the jacket is Topman, my hoodie is American Apparel, shirt is Topman again, and then my freshers t-shirt.

What's your favourite shop? Topman before it got too indie, nowadays it's probably ASOS or American Apparel in the sales.

Favourite designer? Definitely Fred Perry

And what's your favourite item of clothing ever? Some jeans I have from Hollister.

Thanks Chris!
