"The hunt begins" were the only words spoken on Todd Lynn's 2010 Auntum/Winter catwalk. The techno soundtrack placed the hunt firmly on the urban London runway, and what a hunt it was.
A collection of opposites, Todd Lynn juxtaposed reinforced leather patching with shredded hems and ribboned mauled-look jackets. The hunter style of the first few looks, with utility boots (brown except for some Louboutin- like flashes of red sole), practical poker-straight hair and a muted palette of gunmetal, beiges and aubergines fading into head-to-toe black. As the colours fade the hunter becomes the hunted. Shoulders are exaggerated with cages and zips, all in heavy leather and fur.
Again opposites are reinforced as a trail of asymmetric leather jackets were sent down the runway, in stark contrast to the straight-edge symmetry of practical khaki shoulders and elbows. Everything is over-padded with leather, studs, rivets and black cage details.
A majestic finale shows a gargantuan black fur extend from shoulders to elbows of the last model to stalk down the catwalk. In this look the hunted truly claims the final word on the hunt.
Here Todd Lynn has succeeded in creating a sinister juxtaposition between animal and human, fashion and practicality, symmetric and off-kilter, even between his stark white runway and jet-black creations. The minimalist styling and industrial-feel soundtrack serve to make the collection even more dark and menacing. If you're looking for Todd Lynn's most thought-provoking collection yet, your hunt is certainly over.
