It may have been just last week that London was celebrating 25 years of its world-famous Fashion Week, but the style world has already moved swiftly on to Paris where big names Balmain and Balenciaga will début their spring/summer collections for next year. However, for those of us closer to home, how can we channel that classic continental style?
Paris chic has always been a major player in the style stakes, and with current figures like Audrey Tautou and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, as well as classic designers Chanel and Dior, French fashion is stronger than ever. To steal this season's delicate Parisian look, team cute ballerina flats with basic monochrome for daywear and add expression with statement accessories. Couple with a skinny belt or bright knit scarf for a splash of colour and dress down with stylishly undone hair and messy topknots. Alternatively, tuck skinny jeans into flat boots and cover up with a Chanel-inspired jacket- a simple boyfriend blazer with rolled up sleeves, or if you are feeling more daring go cropped in tweed or dogtooth fabrics, plus gold buttons are a detail must.
To add edge pair the look with structured shoulders, and swap monochrome and ballet pumps for embellished eveningwear and heels. Hair accessories should be bows or headbands for piling hair high, make-up minimal except classic red lips- très chic. For French fashion in London, Pretty Ballerinas (Westminster) stock statement flats, as well as high street chains. Westbourne Grove (Notting Hill) boasts a range of small Parisian shops including Anne Fontaine and Paul & Joe, but cheaper alternatives can always be found at vintage shops (Brick Lane) or Dover Street Market.
If in doubt, don opaque tights, classic pearls and team with an air of elegance, c'est magnifique.
